ST readingterm 3 Week 5 : Government acts to curb younger smokers
Government acts to curb younger smokersQn 1 ) What are some measures by the government to curb smoking? They implemented heavier fines ( $30-$100) for underage students who smoke.People who label on tobacco products such as "light", "mild","low-tar" and "ultra light" will be banned due to its misleading.Cigarillos and mini cigars will have to be sold in packs of 20 instead of in 10 to make them expensive for students to buy.Places that sell health and youth-centric products such as chinese medicine halls and game arcade will be barred from selling tobacco products and this will decrease the number of tobacco retailers from more than 5,000 now.Lastly, the government also lowers permitted tar and nicotine levels. Qn 2) How succesful these measures would be? Support your answers with reasons I feel that these measures would not be very effective. It would be difficult for those addicted smokers to stop smoking as they are unable to kick off their habbit.Although fines have gone higher and the amount of license is taken away, they would still find ways to continue smoking and secretive methods to sell.Students can afford the prices of ciagrettes and even if the number of ciagrettes per pack decreases and prices increases, they would still continue to buy it.They think that these measures were not too strict. To them, money is not the issue.Having fun and acting cool is their purpose of buying ciagrettes. Those underaged students can hide at some places preventing them from getting caught. |
